Zweven boven het water. “Zonder water geen leven, zonder dijken geen Nederland. Al eeuwenlang zoeken we bescherming tegen het water om een gebied bruikbaar, veilig en bewoonbaar te maken en te houden. Zoals de Maasdijk, die Brabant tegen het wassende water beschermt. Toch moeten er ook nieuwe manieren gezocht worden om in vreedzame coëxistentie met het water te leven. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn nieuwe uiterwaarden, bekkens en buffers. Maar ook waterwoningen, waterrecreatie en nieuwe verbindingen die de vitale kracht van het water ervaarbaar en beleefbaar maken. Het water weer beleefbaar too te zweven boven het water.
Met het initiatief ‘Een dijk van een ontdekking’ zet waterschap Aa en Maas een 1e stap om de schoonheid van het gebied in Gewande (nabij ‘s-Hertogenbosch) te verbeteren. Door dwarsverbindingen aan te leggen tussen de Maasdijk en het water kunnen we het water, de natuur en de rust ondervinden. Daarom is een verkenning gemaakt die verder ging dan waterveiligheid alleen. En er is een prijsvraag (crowd sourcing) uitgezet onder 10.000 studenten naar de mogelijkheid voor een bredere inzet van de dijk. Uit 40 inzendingen is het concept ‘Een dijk van een ontdekking’ verkozen als winnaar. Een pier die symbool staat voor de verbinding tussen dijk en rivier.” (werkplaats de gruyter)

Het ontwerp van de pier staat haaks op de bestaande dijk en biedt uitzicht over de uiterwaarden. De pier is een vertaling van het afschieten van een kanonskogel vanuit het fort dat vroeger op deze locatie heeft gestaan.

”Perception – experience” Landscape Pier
As the essence of the entire Gewande landscape development, in the design of the pier located in the historical fort, we take into consideration the local natural history, the fluctuation of the water level and the safety factors. Taking the “perception and experience” as the main thread, let the pier integrate into nature naturally and become a part of nature.
When we study the history of Blauwe Sluis, we find that in history the location of the pier is the location of the fort. This formed the inspiration for the design of the pier, together with the form and usage of a cannon that used to have an important position at the fort. Both where an inspiration for the design. The entrance of the pier located on the location of the original fort represent the cannon. Two circular platforms of natural materials one high and one low represent the position where the cannon balls bounce and dip into the water. The metal material walkway is the firing route of the canon balls. At top of the high water level platform, people can have a panoramic view of Gewande, while in the low water level platform, people can have close contact with the flood plain and the Maas river.
The high water level platform uses mild wood, while the low water level platform is the combination of wood and stone, which gradually integrates with nature from high to low and forms a strong contrast with the metal material of the walkway. This treatment also expresses our thinking about the historical war: what the former fort is now firing no longer the cold cannon balls, but the experience of peace and nature.

Floating model
In the design process, we think about the relationship between the pier and water:
– Partly floating (against nature: during both high and low water levels, the pier can float on the water surface)
– Partly underwater (integration with nature: both two platforms can be reached with low water level, only one platform can be reached during high water level)
Considering the influence of landscape pier on flow velocity and water level during flood, the waterboard chose “Partly underwater” as the final scheme. This option also makes the landscape pier a better transition and integration with the context and enhances the experience: both platforms can be reached during low water level, and only one platform can be reached of high water level, so that the users can feel the dynamic change of water level and the power of flooding more directly.
